Netflix Reportedly Wins Bidding War For Nipsey Hussle Doc, Family Refutes Claim

Since the untimely passing of Hip Hop star Nipsey Hussle, his mantra of The Marathon Continues has lived on. Despite that, several streaming sites are sprinting at the chance to own the rights to a forthcoming posthumous documentary about the L.A. Hip Hop artist … but one of them has already claimed victory.

According to Deadline, streaming giant Netflix has claimed that they beat out both Amazon and Apple for the rights to release the documentary about Nip’s life, executive produced by RocNation, directed and co-produced by Ava DuVernay alongside Hussle’s Marathon Films.

However, several people close to the project say that nothing has been put to paper as of yet, with his close friend J Stone, and his sister Samantha both taking to social media to confirm that a deal has not been confirmed.

The one thing that is certain, is DeVernay’s directing of the doc, her first since the ever-popular and critically acclaimed 13th. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Nipsey’s people reached out to DuVernay to direct and co-produce the film after being longtime admirers of her work.

The respect between the late rapper and director was a mutual one, with Ava inviting Nip to speak on a panel about the detrimental effects of for-profit prisons on inner-city communities.
