There is a distinct flavor of Hollywood self-mythology that only works when it is paired with equal parts style, cynicism, and raw ambition. Enter Chapter 51, a sleek new thriller from photographer-turned-filmmaker Tyler Shields that looks to dissect the film industry’s obsessive “the show must go on” ethos, even when that “show” is literally a crime scene.

Distributed by Cineverse and set for a June 23 release in select theaters, the first trailer has officially dropped, showcasing an intriguing mix of Hollywood glamour and psychological dread.

The film centers on the chaotic production of Dissident, a fictional, monstrously budgeted $500 million blockbuster. The shoot quickly devolves into a nightmare when three of its lead actresses are systematically murdered by an unidentified serial killer dubbed the “Hollywood Killer”.

But in a chillingly realistic critique of industry greed, production doesn’t shut down. Instead, as panic spreads, a new director steps in, and the cameras keep rolling. Cut to years later: former FBI agent Thomas Scott reopens the case, unraveling a dark story about the true cost of show business, ambition, and obsession.

At the center of this stylish madness is the incomparable Colman Domingo in the role of Christopher Demy. He is joined by an ensemble, featuring Abigail Breslin as Ava Bergman, alongside Emily Alyn Lind, Charlotte Lawrence, and Connor Paolo.

The real draw of Chapter 51 might actually be behind the scenes. Tyler Shields secretly spent four years crafting this project, and technically, it’s a massive achievement.

It is officially the first feature film in history to be shot across every major film format, including 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, and 65mm, utilizing legendary Panavision lenses and Panavision System 65. Furthermore, it is the first film since the 1960s to record synchronized sound in VistaVision, though the vast majority of the thriller was captured on massive IMAX film cameras.

Chapter 51 hits select theaters and on demand on June 23.
