Morgan State Increases Enrollment For The Third Year In A Row

For the third consecutive year, Morgan State has a record enrollment rate, according to Blavity.

The university recorded a record enrollment growth for the third straight year. There are now 9,808 students at the college, marking an 8% increase from 2022.

“The momentum happening at Morgan is undeniable, and across the country, prospective students and their parents are taking notice,” Morgan State President David Wilson said in a press release.

“The work that we’ve done over the past decade to advance Morgan as a rising high research university has aided in raising our profile nationally while introducing us to new markets and new students as a highly sought-after option for achieving educational and academic pursuits.”

Additionally, over half the class of 2023 is from states outside of Maryland, as well as the District of Columbia. Students come from 41 states across the country, in agreement that the reach Morgan State has across the country is remarkable.

President Wilson said the newly introduced programs may have cajoled students to choose Morgan.

“From the growth in the unique and future-focused academic degree programs we’re offering to the state-of-the-art new facilities we’re erecting on campus, to the cutting-edge research we’re conducting in our centers and laboratories, there is no shortage of reasons to choose Morgan," he said.

Most recently, the school added advanced degree options, including graduate programs in Data Analytics and Visualization, Advanced Computing, Secure Embedded Systems Engineering, Architecture, Urbanism and Built Environments and a Doctor of Social Work.

The increase in enrollment at Morgan State is part of a widespread trend at colleges and HBCUs in which enrollment has grown for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. HBCUs “outpaced overall undergraduate enrollment by seeing a growth of over 6%.” And, students of color accounted for most of the increase for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

“We like what we are seeing in terms of our annual enrollment growth,” Kara Turner, Ph.D., senior vice president for Enrollment Management and Student Success, said on the school’s website.

“Morgan has been able to buck the national trends and attract students at historic levels, not only from here in our home state or Maryland but from around the country in areas where we have not traditionally had such a strong presence. The comprehensive strategy that we’ve implemented over the past five years, and particularly coming out of the pandemic period, is producing positive results.”
