Brandon Scott Secures Primary Democratic Nomination For Mayor Of Baltimore

Brandon Scott is one step closer to serving a second term as the mayor of Baltimore.

Brandon Scott

According to the Associated Press, Scott, a proponent of reducing crime, investing in Baltimore’s youth and modernizing government, is running for re-election to “continue what he started.”

His endorsements include but are not limited to, the Metropolitan Baltimore AFL-CIO Council, IAFF Local 734 and IAFF Local 964, AFSCME.

Scott secured the primary democratic nomination over former Mayor Sheila Dizon, whose tenure was cut short in 2010 after she took a plea deal for “misappropriating gift cards meant for poor families.”

Forty percent of likely voters said they would re-elect Scott, with 32% saying they would vote for Dixon according to a Goucher Poll.

Now, Scott is the favorite in November’s general election in the heavily Democratic city. Back in 2020, both Scott and Dixon ran, and Scott beat out Dixon by a narrow margin.

Coinciding with the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Scott in his first term received criticism for turnover within his administration and COVID-19 restrictions that folks considered “too stringent and other minor complaints.”

Still, Scott announced his reelection bid in a presser back in November of 2023 ahead of a packed house of “elected leaders, community groups and other supporters at Cahill Recreation.”

Amid his announcement, Scott focused on his success as mayor, reminding folks that he served Baltimore City for over 17 years.

In 2011, at age 27, Scott became the youngest person ever elected to the Baltimore City Council. He later ascended to City Council President in 2019 amid the scandal involving Mayor Catherine Pugh.

The 40-year-old public figure and 52nd mayor of Baltimore has a sensational background in public service and leadership.

Outside of his city experience, the incumbent mayor was a member of the Young Elected Officials Network (YEO), secretary for the YEO housing and Urban Development cabinet and chair of the National League of City’s large cities council.

“(We’ve had) a historic reduction of homicides of 20% last year. No mayor in the history of the city other than me has seen that big of a drop from one year to the next,” Scott told 11 News in May.
