Black Men In Atlanta Champion Students On Their First Day Of School
In Georgia, students are heading back to school, and what better way to walk into school than with overwhelming applause?
Over 100 members from 100 Black Men of Atlanta and Emerging 100 Atlanta convened at B.E.S.T Academy on the first day of school, extending a warm welcome to returning students. The event, with the intent to boost student morale and promote academic success, was also attended by Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who joined the groups in celebrating the students’ return.
B.E.S.T Academy, known for its strong academic track record, reported an impressive graduation rate of 96.3% last year, the third highest in Atlanta Public Schools (APS). This sets a high bar for this academic year, and the support from community leaders and mentors at the school gate is a positive kickoff to what many hope will be another outstanding year.
There has been a plea for more Black male representation in education. In the 2020–2021 school year, Black, non-Hispanic men accounted for 1.3% of the nation’s 3.8 million public school teachers, according to the National Center for Education Statistics’s National Teacher and Principal Survey. Studies show that young Black boys perform better in school when they have teachers who look like them.
The members of 100 Black Men and Emerging 100 Atlanta, organizations dedicated to leadership development and educational support, were stationed at the school’s entrances, greeting students with high fives, encouraging words and expressions of support. This personal interaction is part of a broader initiative to create positive relationships between students and community figures, fostering an environment conducive to learning and personal development.
As students start a new academic year, the presence of these Black men on the first day back to school sends a powerful message about the importance of education and community support.
As the school year progresses, the community looks forward to seeing how this strong start impacts student success at B.E.S.T Academy.
