Former President Barack Obama Praises Kamala Harris at DNC, Outshines Trump
Former president Barack Obama absolutely torched Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.
Obama delivered his most “animated address in nearly a decade,” working to pass his political legacy to Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, according to Politico.
Largely staying behind the scenes as Democrats removed President Joe Biden from the nomination process, Obama was thrust front and center Tuesday, which closed out the second night of the Democratic convention, as well as his wife, Michelle.
Obama lauded Biden, declaring that “the torch has been passed,” contrasting the styles of Harris and “a guy whose act has – let’s face it – gotten pretty stale,” the former president said.
“America is ready for a new chapter. America’s ready for a better story,” Obama told the crowd. “We are ready for a President Kamala Harris.”
The speech that Obama made was a transition between “Biden’s valedictory Monday night address, and the final two nights of programming centered around the revamped Democratic ticket.”
The speech also made clear Obama’s role as the party’s most effective and beloved messenger by a landslide, along with Michelle, who also gave a seminal speech of her own, which connected the enthusiasm Harris’ weeks-old campaign has generated with the same hope Obama inspired amid his first, historic run.
The former president has remained out of the limelight for the last two years. Campaign organizers are hoping that limiting his public appearances will make his returns that much more sentimental, giving his words that much more power.
Standing before several folks for a 35-minute gem, Obama torched Trump and it wasn’t close at all.
“A 78-year-old billionaire who hasn’t stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It’s been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually gotten worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” he said.
“The childish nicknames and crazy conspiracy theories and weird obsession with crowd size,” he said while holding his hands a few inches apart, a joke about anatomy over crowds. “It just goes on and on. The other day, I heard someone compare Trump to the neighbor who keeps running his leaf blower outside your window every minute of every day.”
The speech was masterful. Relive the entire speech here.
