Social media sensation Cameron Browning, known as Crocodile Cam, has been captivating audiences on X (formerly Twitter) with his engaging wildlife education content. A former college football athlete, Browning combines his charismatic approach with a deep passion for animals to educate his followers about endangered species and lesser-known creatures. His posts are a mix of fun and informative, sparking curiosity and a thirst for knowledge about the animal kingdom. Daily, his fans engage with him, eager to learn more about animal behaviors and the traits of the world’s most exotic animals.
The Quintessential Gentleman caught up with the animal enthusiast to discuss his passion, future life working with animals and more.
Talk about your upbringing and how you came to have a natural love for animals.
I grew up watching Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel religiously. Anything involving animals I immediately invested. When I first began watching The Crocodile Hunter, I believe that set me on my path of working with and educating people on dangerous animals in the way that I do today. I love all animals and wish to protect them as well.
Why is X a great tool to educate the masses about different animal species?
X (formerly Twitter) allows people to interact in a way that other social media simply don’t. It also comes with a “community note” aspect that corrects false information that would easily spread on other social media. X is also an app that can allow people to be most critical of others and I find that it not only keeps me humble but forces me to do things the right way which I really appreciate.
What is a misconception about our community when it comes to preserving wildlife?
I think a common misconception is that many Black people don’t care about wildlife. The truth is, a lot of us simply don’t understand it. As I have been building my name, I have had numerous people talk about how much I have taught them or even how I have helped them begin to overcome their fears. Moments like that make what I do worthwhile.
Who did you grow up admiring when it comes to your passion for animals?
I grew up admiring Steve Irwin. I believe he was the main pioneer who inspired everyone to work with animals today. Other people like Micheal Holston (The Real Tarzan) and Brian Barczyk inspired me heavily as well.
What are the different types of professions that can come along with education about animals?
Outside of being a content creator, one could be a veterinarian, a teacher/professor, an animal trainer, or even do animal rescues which is something I have done several times.
What do you hope your followers learn by watching you on social media?
You don’t need to be afraid of any animal. All you have to do is respect them. And if we can protect the animals of this planet, then we can protect the planet.
What’s next for you?
No matter what, I am going to continue pursuing my dream and trying to inspire and educate as many people as I can.
