The Biggest Mental Health Challenges Men and Their Families Face

There are many mental health problems out there, and anyone can develop one at any point in their lives. However, you do not need to worry about these, as, in most cases, mental health disorders are treatable and manageable. It is important that you always speak about how you are feeling, though, and seek professional support if you are struggling. Here are some of the biggest mental health challenges for men that you should not shy away from and that you need to be aware of throughout your life. 


Depression


Depression haunts a lot of people, and this can be incredibly distressing for men and their families. As a depressed person, you might feel lifeless and exhausted. You might have difficulty concentrating and experience low mood. You might also lose your appetite and passion for hobbies and activities that you used to enjoy. Your sex drive might be lower, and you might find that you become irritable and frustrated quicker than usual. However, you do not have to face depression alone. All you need to do is to speak to a doctor and consider getting support from a loved one. A doctor will be able to give you self-care tips, as well as refer you to a therapist. In some cases, they may also prescribe you with medication like anti-depressants. 


Substance Abuse


Many people drink alcohol on occasion. However, this can become a problem if you are drinking every single day or if you are binge drinking. You might also discover that you have a problem if you become reliant on alcohol to get through the day or if you are drinking to cover up other mental health issues. Men also experience problems with drugs, and this can have an impact on their physical health, leave them out of work, and cause issues with childcare. Although substance abuse has a stigma around it, it is curable. Anxiety 


Many men are afraid to admit that they have anxiety. However, there is strength in discussing your mental health issues openly with others and seeking a solution. Anxiety can create racing thoughts that are paired with a fast heartbeat. You might experience chest pain and panic attacks, as well as cold sweats. You might be unable to sleep or stop worrying and avoid certain situations, such as socializing with friends. After a while, you might feel isolated, and you might also lose weight. If this is the case, you should try mindfulness routines, such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing. You might also look into CBT and try going on nature walks once a day. 


PTSD


Some people associate PTSD with war and battle. Although some ex-military personnel have PTSD, it is not a condition that is exclusively associated with those who have seen active service. Instead, it can also be caused by other traumatic circumstances, such as serious illness, the death of a loved one, or sexual assault and domestic abuse. If you have PTSD, you need to look after your physical well-being, ensure that you can stay present using grounding techniques, and ensure that you are aware of the physical symptoms and triggers that you have.
