Morehouse men strive not only for success in their chosen fields but also use their platforms to champion social change, embodying the college's mission to cultivate men of purpose and integrity. Their achievements continue to inspire future generations of Morehouse graduates to excel in the arts and entertainment industries.


Here are seven notable Morehouse men who have made an indelible mark on the entertainment world.


1. Samuel L. Jackson (Class of 1972)


Samuel L. Jackson

Ranked as the highest all-time box office star, Samuel L. Jackson is a name synonymous with versatility and longevity in Hollywood. Known for his commanding voice and intense on-screen presence, Jackson has starred in over 150 films, from Do The Right Thing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he plays Nick Fury. He credits his time at Morehouse with igniting his passion for acting and activism, both of which continue to define his career. Jackson enrolled at Morehouse in 1966 but was expelled in 1969 after locking the college's board members in a building for two days to protest the school's curriculum and governance. In 1971, he reapplied and graduated as a drama major in 1972.


2. Bill Nunn (Class of 1976)

The late Bill Nunn was known for his unforgettable roles in films like Do the Right Thing and Spider-Man. His career, spanning over four decades, showcased his ability to bring nuance and depth to his characters. Nunn’s time at Morehouse paved the way for a fruitful acting career that made him a beloved figure in both film and TV. His first acting job was in fellow Morehouse alum Spike Lee’s second film, School Daze, based on Lee’s own experience at the college.


3. Spike Lee (Class of 1979)

Legendary filmmaker, director and actor, Spike Lee has been a trailblazer in telling stories that confront race, politics and culture. With films such as She's Gotta Have ItMalcolm X, and BlacKkKlansman, Lee has redefined Black cinema. While at Morehouse, he directed his first student film and formed relationships that would prove vital throughout his career. He is not only a creative visionary but also a passionate advocate for Black filmmakers. Last year, Lee partnered with The Gersh Agency to start a Fellows Program to help students gain access and exposure to opportunities in entertainment.


4. Rockmond Dunbar (Class of 1991)

Actor Rockmond Dunbar has gained recognition for his compelling performances in hit television shows like Soul Food, Prison Break and 9-1-1. At Morehouse, Dunbar honed not only his craft but also his sense of purpose and community.


5. PJ Morton (Class of 2003)


PJ Morton

Grammy-winning musician PJ Morton has forged a unique career as a solo artist, songwriter and member of the popular band Maroon 5. Morton, the son of a pastor and a gospel singer, honed his musical talents at Morehouse, blending his gospel roots with R&B, soul and jazz. Morehouse was the only college that Morton applied to. During his second year, he moved off campus and met India Arie. He wrote a song for her second album, and she won two Grammy Awards. His commitment to authenticity and musical integrity earned him recognition, including several Grammy Awards for his solo work.


6. Brian Tyree Henry (Class of 2004)

Brian Tyree Henry has emerged as one of the most dynamic actors of his generation. He is best known for his role as Alfred 'Paper Boi' Miles on the critically acclaimed show Atlanta, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Henry’s career spans television, film, and stage, with his performances in If Beale Street Could Talk and Joker highlighting his range and depth as an actor.


7. John David Washington (Class of 2006)


John David Washington

The son of famed actor Denzel Washington, John David Washington has carved out his own space in Hollywood. Known for his breakout role in HBO’s Ballers and his leading roles in BlacKkKlansman and Tenet, Washington’s range as an actor has made him a sought-after talent. While at Morehouse, he excelled as a running back, set several school records, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Sociology.
