David Alan Grier Stars in NBC’s New Sitcom 'St. Denis Medical,' A Hilarious Take on Hospital Life
David Alan Grier returns to TV comedy in NBC’s latest mockumentary sitcom, St. Denis Medical.
Set to premiere on November 12, this highly-anticipated series offers a humorous look into the lives of overworked and underfunded healthcare professionals in a fictional Oregon hospital.
Co-created by Justin Spitzer, known for Superstore and American Auto, alongside writer and executive producer Eric Ledgin, St. Denis Medical is a fresh take on workplace sitcoms.
The show centers on Dr. Ron, played by Grier, the oldest surgeon on staff. Once a revolutionary with a big afro, helping at free clinics, Dr. Ron is now very different from his idealistic past.
"The best thing I love about my character is that he was a revolutionary," Grier shared in an exclusive interview with The Quintessential Gentleman. "Thirty years ago, he had the big afro, fed the poor, helped at a free clinic, and now he has just given up." Grier laughs, "The system has beaten him down. I know that dude. I am not that dude, but I know that dude.”
This full-circle role is particularly special for Grier. Before his breakout in In Living Color, he once aspired to portray a doctor on St. Elsewhere, a popular 1980s medical drama. Now, years later, Grier finally steps into the role he dreamed of, albeit with a comedic twist.
In St. Denis Medical, Wendi McLendon-Covey stars as Joyce, the hospital’s well-meaning yet sometimes inept executive director. Allison Tolman takes on the role of supervising nurse Alex, with Josh Lawson as Bruce, a trauma surgeon balancing skill with some quirky idiosyncrasies. Mekki Leeper, Kahyun Kim and Kaliko Kauahi round out the cast as nurses Matt, Serena, and Val, whose unique personalities bring a humorous dynamic to the day-to-day operations of the hospital.
The trailer already hints at comedic highs, as hospital staff grapple with issues ranging from scarce resources to absurd encounters with patients. From Dr. Ron's frustration with the system to Joyce's attempts to keep the hospital afloat, St. Denis Medical promises viewers plenty of laughs as well as a deeper look into the ups and downs of hospital life.
