Shomari Figures Makes History as First Black Congressman from Alabama’s 2nd District

In a historic victory that electrified voters in Alabama’s newly redrawn 2nd congressional district, Shomari Figures was elected Tuesday night to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Hailing from Mobile, Figures is now the first Black person to represent Alabama's 2nd District since 1832.

Figures’ victory brings renewed hope for change in Alabama’s majority-Black district, where residents and voting advocates have long fought for fairer representation.

Alabama’s newly redrawn 2nd congressional district is a majority-Black district that represents the state's journey toward equitable representation. After a prolonged legal battle and a federal court ruling, the district was reshaped to better reflect the demographics of its residents, who have historically faced challenges in gaining proportional representation.

“Tonight is a victory for all who believe in the power of representation,” Figures stated in his victory speech. “This district deserves a voice that truly reflects its values, its challenges, and its strength.”

The election results came after months of grassroots efforts by advocacy groups, who worked tirelessly to educate voters about the district changes. Organizations statewide ran outreach programs and held informational sessions right up to Election Day, ensuring that citizens were informed about their voting rights and the significance of this pivotal race. Despite initial concerns about low turnout during Super Tuesday, these efforts paid off, with Figures securing a decisive 54.5% of the vote against his opponent, longtime GOP candidate Dobson, who captured 45.5%.

In the early hours of the night, Dobson conceded, paving the way for Figures’ celebrated win. His background in public service has been central to his appeal among voters. As the son of a prominent political family in South Alabama, he grew up with a deep understanding of the importance of public service. Figures’ career includes roles in the Justice Department and extensive work with the Obama and Biden administrations, where he championed civil rights and social justice initiatives. His experience, combined with his community roots, made him a powerful contender in this year’s race.

The redistricting of Alabama’s 2nd District has national implications as well, with Democrats seizing the opportunity to reclaim a congressional seat. This victory brings momentum for the national Democratic Party, which faced challenges in flipping seats in traditionally conservative regions. Political analysts note that Figures’ win not only underscores the significance of fair district mapping but also demonstrates the strength of the Democratic message in areas often thought to lean Republican.
