Legend Jeff Gordon to Come out of Retirement, Race for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
After eight months of retirement, Jeff Gordon will push the petal to the medal once more and race for coveted NASCAR racer Dale Earnhardt Jr. according to ESPN’s Bob Pockrass.
Gordon, whose last race was Nov. 22 at the 2015 Ford EcoBoost 400, will race for a concussed Earnhardt in this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Earnhardt was involved in a 22-car wreck in Daytona earlier this month, as well as a wreck at Michigan International Speedway last month.
The popular racer pledged his brain to medical researchers who will look for a concussion and traumatic brain injury connection.
“I’m looking forward to treatment with the goal of getting back in the race car when the doctor’s say I’m ready,” Earnhardt said to the LA Times.
Gordon will race in the No. 88 Chevrolet, which would have been Earnhardt’s car. The legendary racer, who turns 45 on Aug. 4, has won 93 series races and four season championships in a 24-year span.
His last win was on Nov. 1 at the Martinsville, VA Speedway.
Earnhardt has a career 26 wins, 148 top five finishes, 252 top 10 finishes and 412 top 20 finishes.
